Ghana's new Sports Fund is asking companies to pay in

Ghana has set up a national Sports Fund with GCB Bank as its main bank, and is calling on companies to contribute.

Ghana has created a national Sports Fund by Act of Parliament to finance sports development. In January 2026, the Ministry of Sport and Recreation appointed GCB Bank as the Fund's primary collecting and transaction bank, with a role in investment advice and management.

Who runs it, and how money comes in

The Fund is led by an Administrator, Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, and a board chaired by Prof. Koryoe Anim. Its funding sources are statutory allocations, corporate donations and possible levies. Companies and individuals can contribute through three banks: National Investment Bank, which made a first contribution of GH¢100,000, GCB Bank and United Merchant Bank.

A call to business

In April 2026, at the Kwahu Business Forum, the Administrator called on corporate Ghana to step up its support for sport, and said all donations will be made public. Telecom companies, banks and business leaders were named as the partners the Fund wants.

What it means

A public fund that collects company money for sport is a new player in Ghanaian sponsorship. For brands, a contribution can show support for national sport, but it is not the same as a sponsorship deal: before paying in, ask what visibility, reporting and recognition come with it. For clubs and federations, the Fund may become a new source of money alongside sponsors.
