AthleticsOne athlete, many markets: Kipchoge and Tebogo
Two October 2026 deals show a bank, a company and a government building campaigns around a single African champion.
In the same week of October 2026, two African champions signed deals that go well beyond a logo on a running vest.
Kipchoge and Absa
Absa Group has made Eliud Kipchoge the face of "Story by Story", a brand campaign whose TV advert went live on 12 October 2026 across Absa's 12 African markets. He is also Absa's Official World Tour Financial Partner, announced by Absa Bank Kenya in Nairobi on 13 October. The two-time Olympic marathon champion has just won the 2026 Melbourne Marathon with a course record and plans to run marathons on all seven continents. The value was not disclosed.
Tebogo, De Beers and Botswana
On 15 October 2026, De Beers Group and the Government of Botswana extended their partnership with Letsile Tebogo, the 2024 Olympic 200m champion and Botswana's first Olympic gold medallist. He has been a De Beers Global Ambassador since January 2025. The new three-year programme, "The Road to LA28", is linked to the 60th anniversary of Botswana's independence. The value was not disclosed.
What it means
A single athlete can carry one story across many countries, often more simply than sponsoring many local events. When a government joins, the athlete also becomes a national symbol. For brands, the key questions are the athlete's reputation, the length of the deal, and how the story will be told on the ground.
